Shamrock Shake

Hello there!  Let’s salute the month of March and St. Patrick’s Day with an old fashioned Shamrock Shake!  Instead of going through the drive-thru at McDonald’s you can make a healthy clone of this all-time-favorite shake at home.  When I was a kid I always loved the month of March because of the Shamrock Shakes ~ I can’t tell you how many of those I sucked down!

Now that I know better I can have my shake without all the toxic dairy, high fructose corn syrup, food dyes, processed sugar and preservatives!  You can too!  This recipe is comprised of simple ingredients and comes together quickly in your blender!

Shamrock Shake

  • Blend all ingredients, except cacao nibs if using, in Vitamix blender and pour into serving glass.

  • If using, sprinkle cacao nibs atop the shake.

  • Yields approximately 20 ounces.

Here’s McDonald’s listing of ingredients for the Shamrock Shake…YIKES!  Um, the choice sounds like a no brainer to me!

  • high fructose corn syrup

  • corn syrup

  • water

  • sugar

  • natural flavor (plant source)

  • xanthan gum

  • citric acid

  • sodium benzoate (preservative)

  • yellow 5

  • blue 1

  • cream

  • nonfat milk

  • mono-and diglycerides

  • carrageenan

  • polysorbate 80

  • beta carotene (color)

  • natural (dairy and vegetable source)

  • artificial flavor

  • mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) to protect flavor

Thanks for this post, I just tried McDonald’s Shamrock Shake for the first time this weekend. My 12 year old daughter insisted it was the best, even though she had never tried it before either. Needless to say neither of us enjoyed it. It left a very weird aftertaste. So I’m going to make the healthy version for her tonight…I bet we will both love it.

  4. Loretta

Love, love, LOVE this! Does it need to be spinach, or can it be green kale? Can’t wait to try this! Thanks!

    1. Jen

Hi Loretta! You could use kale but it would taste a bit “green” ~ I personally don’t mind that but I create a lot of recipes with spinach for newbies because they’re just getting used to adding more greens and the taste is neutral. Thanks for stopping by and giving me your feedback! 🙂

  5. Carol Ann

  6. Johnathan

Thanks for the break down of their shake… gross! I’d choose a “natural” one over their shake, any day! I’ve been blogging about my weight loss and I love that I steer away from things like this.

    1. Jen

Hi Johnathan! Thanks for the positive feedback. Best to you on your weight loss journey! 🙂

Funny, I just made spinach juice with few other veggies
    I love it !!

    1. Jen

Oh that sounds amazing…love spinach so much because it is so neutral! It’s really a great leafy green for newbies adopting a more plant based approach to their diet. Thanks for your feedback!

  11. Deanna Heiliger

  12. Jay

It is crazy seeing the fine print of all the foreign ingredients on the McDonalds recipe and knowing that I used to eat those with no questions asked. Not anymore! By the way, I’m down 20lbs as a result of your healthy recommendations. Thanks Jen!

    1. Jen

Thanks for your exciting feedback, Jay! I’m so happy for you as reach your weight loss goals. Do you agree that eating well can be delicious and fun? That’s the paradigm shift I’m trying to break thru to my clients and readers. Have a great day and congrats again on your success!

  13. Keri

Where in the store do you find peppermint oil extract? I have to try this!

    1. Jen

Hi Keri, you can buy it at Target or Trader Joe’s in the baking aisle. Make sure to look for “PURE PEPPERMINT OIL” ~ some brands contain other junk. My most recent bottle was purchased at Trader Joe’s. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog! 🙂
