Shamrock Shake

Hello there!  Let’s salute the month of March and St. Patrick’s Day with an old fashioned Shamrock Shake!  Instead of going through the drive-thru at McDonald’s you can make a healthy clone of this all-time-favorite shake at home.  When I was a kid I always loved the month of March because of the Shamrock Shakes ~ I can’t tell you how many of those I sucked down!

Now that I know better I can have my shake without all the toxic dairy, high fructose corn syrup, food dyes, processed sugar and preservatives!  You can too!  This recipe is comprised of simple ingredients and comes together quickly in your blender!

Shamrock Shake

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Blend all ingredients, except cacao nibs if using, in Vitamix blender and pour into serving glass.

  • If using, sprinkle cacao nibs atop the shake.

  • Yields approximately 20 ounces.

 

Here’s McDonald’s listing of ingredients for the Shamrock Shake…YIKES!  Um, the choice sounds like a no brainer to me!

  • high fructose corn syrup

  • corn syrup

  • water

  • sugar

  • natural flavor (plant source)

  • xanthan gum

  • citric acid

  • sodium benzoate (preservative)

  • yellow 5

  • blue 1

  • cream

  • nonfat milk

  • mono-and diglycerides

  • carrageenan

  • polysorbate 80

  • beta carotene (color)

  • natural (dairy and vegetable source)

  • artificial flavor

  • mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) to protect flavor

    Thanks for this post, I just tried McDonald’s Shamrock Shake for the first time this weekend. My 12 year old daughter insisted it was the best, even though she had never tried it before either. Needless to say neither of us enjoyed it. It left a very weird aftertaste. So I’m going to make the healthy version for her tonight…I bet we will both love it.
