Chocolate Banana Soy Smoothie

I have been trying to up my protein intake lately per my nutritionist’s recommendation.  He suggests for my height, weight, health history and current blood-work that I consume 90-100 grams of protein per day.  He’s fine with it being plant or animal based ~ I’m trying a combination of both.  So in comes the soy milk.  I’m not a big soy fan in general but I’m giving it a try to see how it meshes with my system.  There are a lot of controversies out there regarding soy so I thought I’d do some experimentation myself.

Chocolate Banana Soy Smoothie

  • 2 Tablespoons of cacao powder
  • 2 Tablespoons of raw almond butter (or all natural peanut butter)
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1.5 cups Earth Balance Organic Unsweetened Soy Milk
  • 5-10 drops vanilla stevia
  • 6 ice cubes

Blend all ingredients in your Vitamix blender and serve.  Yields over 20 ounces and provides 17 grams of quick, delicious protein.

ohhh yum! i just made almond butter so this might be my breakfast tomorrow! i need to switch up the smoothies def! lol and what else are you doing for protein? i been lifting more and want to start adding more in but trouble is everything i do is so high in fat and trust me i love my fats and dont avoid them at all but im trying to figure out anything not as high in fat but higher in protein you no?

Oh wow, homemade almond butter. I still haven’t been able to get that to work for me in my Vitamix (at least without it shutting my Vitamix down and my fear of blowing up my Vitamix). I think a food processor is in order but I do not have one at the moment.

Other protein sources: SunWarrior protein powder shakes, tempeh, sprouted tofu, seeds, beans, quinoa, eggs and wild caught fish. I’m not much into animal flesh. I hear ya about the high fat ~ not scared of it either but I have scaled back from extreme intake to a more moderate intake. My nutritionist said we should get fat along with our protein to assist in digestion and assimilation of nutrients. Still figuring all this out and I am guessing it will be a lifelong experiment, eh? Glad we can do this together!!!

Love the Chocolate, but with banana is not one of them, I like a banana along or in cereals only,

Great recipe. This I should try!

this looks delicious, but i would omit the stevia to keep it more natural. I can just imagine this with crushed ice, delicious !

    1. Jen

Hi Jana. Stevia is an all natural herb so no worries there. It’s not like artificial sweeteners such as Splenda, Equal, etc. Enjoy! Love lots of crushed ice in my smoothies!

Sounds awesome! I still do dairy so I use whey protein, but this sounds awesome. I’ll have to give it a try! <3

Hi Yvonne! Almond butter is so versatile and there are so many variations out there. Some contain sugar and other flavorings (i.e.: cinnamon, honey, etc.). Almond butter can be used anywhere –> smoothies, gluten-free toast/waffles, protein shakes, as a dip for your banana or apples…possibilities are endless!

Can you make this smoothie with something other than soy milk?

    1. Jen

Hi Meli, you could use filtered water, almond milk, coconut milk, etc. I just went through a “test” soy phase to see how my body reacted. I don’t think I have an issue with it (unlike gluten and dairy) so I consume in light moderation only. Thanks for checking out my blog! :-)

      1. Meli

It was recommended that I not use soy due to the estrogen issue. I know I can use a small about of organic soy, however, knowing I can use another kind of milk makes the recipe look even better!

There are a lot of negative messages running around regarding soy products

    1. Jen

There sure are a lot of controversies regarding soy. I personally don’t react to it (unlike gluten and dairy) but I still only consume in moderation due to long-term concerns with hormone disruption. A lot of the controversy stems from the types of soy we consume ~ the more processed the more problematic. Eating soy in its most natural form is best (i.e. edamamae beans).
